From Mr. Powell:
Good Day Panther Family & Welcome Back! Welcome to February!
The snow has melted and the streets have cleared! I know that we are all delighted to be back in school. Please make note of the following:
• ATLAS Interim Assessments will begin this week for English Language Arts. In subsequent weeks, we will administer the Math & Science Assessments. This is the final interim assessment before the ATLAS Summative in April 2026. Please assist the PHMS team by encouraging your students to give their best efforts.
• To make up for the 6th days of lost instruction, the LRSD considering converting all (or some) of the following non-contact days to instructional days. These days are Monday, February 16th, Monday, February 23rd, and Friday, March 20th. The LRSD Administration will provide guidance on this plan in the coming days.
• Bell 2 Bell; No Cell.... The first year of implementation of this law has been challenging. We begin the year with pouches for students to secure their cellphones. Regrettably, our pouch supply has now been depleted. We now require students to power their phones off upon arriving to campus. Cellphones should then be placed in their backpacks and not removed until the end of the school day when students have left the school building.
• Bell 2 Bell; No Cell... Given that this is a state law & LRSD policy, enforcement and consequences for non-compliance are necessary. These consequences will include progressive disciplinary actions (i.e.: Warnings, Lunch Detention, In-School Suspensions, & Suspensions). Confiscated cellphones will be placed in school vault for parent retrieval. PLEASE NOTE: Students are not subject to an arrest for cellphone violations.
• No Pass Days.... Students are never restricted to use our restroom facilities. No Pass Days requires our teachers to inform the office, administrators or security of those students who will be leaving their classes to use the restroom facilities. This is a safety feature that allows us to better monitor authorized travel in our school corridors and restrooms.
• PHMS Students, Stakeholders, and Staff will celebrate African American History Day on Thursday, February 26th. Further details will be available prior to the date.
• Finally, our PHMS Counseling Department (Ms. Franklin & Ms. Christie) will be providing information pertaining to the Course Selection Process. Counselors and Administrators will be available for questions in this regard.

During physical science, students explored the states of matter through a hands-on lab using dry ice. Student observed dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) change state when energy is added or removed. Students watched dry ice sublimate directly from a solid to a gas, compared what happens when it’s placed in water and soapy water, and observed how gas particles behave when trapped in a flask. Students measured temperature changes, recorded detailed observations, and connected what they saw to particle motion in solids, liquids, and gases. This lab helped students distinguish between physical changes and chemical changes, reinforce safety practices in the lab, and apply real-world examples to abstract concepts like particle spacing and energy transfer.

During 8th grade Physical Science, students witnessed a combustion reaction up close during their first class back for the second semester! Mrs Scott placed a sparkler through a chicken egg and then ignited the sparkler. Students observed how a combustion reaction releases energy in the form of heat and light. The sparkler’s intense heat showed how combustion requires fuel, oxygen, and heat, and how that energy transfer can cause physical and chemical changes to materials around it. The egg was a perfect real-world example of how heat from a combustion reaction. Students then came inside and discussed how oxygen was still being created inside the egg as the sparkler continued to move through the egg.
