Little Rock School District announced an exciting new opportunity for families with the launch of the state's first Bilingual Education/Dual Language Immersion program, starting in the 2026–2027 school year. The District received state approval to implement the program on April 10, 2026, following nearly two years of planning and development.
This program is built on three main pillars:
● Bilingualism and biliteracy education - helping students learn two languages
● Academic Achievement – helping students do well in school
● Cultural Competence – helping students understand and respect different cultures
Beginning in the fall 2026–2027 school year, kindergarten classes at Watson and Chicot Elementary Schools will be the first to be enrolled. One grade level will be added each year as the program grows.
Outlined below are the vision, goals, and beliefs, which guide the design and implementation of the Bilingual Ed./Dual Language Immersion Program.
Program Vision:
In a caring culture of global awareness, all LRSD dual language immersion students will graduate bilingual, biliterate AND ready for college, career, and life.
Program Goals:
In the Little Rock School District, students participate in a rigorous dual language program that accelerates academic growth while promoting high levels of proficiency in both Spanish and English. Through focused instruction in the four language domains—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—students develop strong bilingual communication skills and achieve academic excellence in both languages. The program also supports students in exploring their cultural identities and fosters an appreciation for diverse perspectives. By cultivating positive cross-cultural attitudes and socio-cultural competence, students are prepared to thrive in a multicultural and multilingual world.
Program Beliefs:
We believe that every child thrives in a school environment that is caring, cooperative, and inclusive. Our program is committed to nurturing the whole child by supporting their social, emotional, and cognitive development in a safe and respectful space. We recognize families as essential partners in this journey and actively engage them in meaningful collaboration to support each student’s growth and success. Together, we cultivate a community where all learners feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Here is a summary of what this means for families. Our Bilingual Education/Dual Language Immersion program is designed to help students become fluent in both English and Spanish while also being ready for college, a career, and life. Students will learn to read, write, speak, and listen in both languages, helping them succeed in all subjects while building strong communication skills. The program also helps students understand and respect different cultures and take pride in who they are. We believe every child learns best in a safe, caring, and supportive school, and we work closely with families to support each student’s success. Together, we create a positive learning environment where all students feel valued and encouraged to do their best.
