The Little Rock School District (LRSD) received an unexpected dose of early holiday cheer this week, thanks to St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church’s “Give Thanks, Give Back” initiative. In a heartfelt show of community partnership and gratitude, the church awarded grants, totaling $6,000, to six LRSD schools in a surprise “Prize Patrol”-style celebration.

Members of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, led by Pastor Billy Burris, traveled from campus to campus on Wednesday morning to hand-deliver the checks, spreading encouragement, smiles, and the true spirit of Thanksgiving.

The initiative reflects the church’s belief in the transformative power of education and comes at a critical time, as many families face additional challenges due to the federal government shutdown and temporary pause in SNAP benefits.

“We believe that children are the future - and what better way to give back than by investing in the places that shape them most: their schools,” said Pastor Burris. “Education is the cornerstone of a thriving community. By supporting our schools, we empower students, uplift teachers, and help shape a stronger future for all.”

After being selected from among several LRSD schools submitting applications for the grants, the following LRSD schools each received $1,000 awards today:

  • McDermott Elementary

  • Terry Elementary

  • Otter Creek Elementary

  • Chicot Elementary

  • Western Hills Elementary

  • Stephens Elementary

Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright praised the church’s generosity and community spirit, noting the impact of such partnerships on student success.

“This gesture from St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church is a powerful reminder of what makes Little Rock so special,” said Dr. Wright. “When faith, community, and education come together, our students win. We’re deeply grateful for the church’s continued support and belief in the mission of LRSD.”

The Little Rock School District extends heartfelt thanks to Pastor Burris and the St. Peter congregation for their leadership, generosity, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of students and families across the city.
