Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright and Ms. Stephanie Walker-Hynes, LRSD’s Director of Child Nutrition, joined Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., and the City of Little Rock Food Commission to spotlight an important cause—eliminating school lunch debt and promoting food security for our students. Through the new "Lunch On Us" initiative, YOU can support LRSD’s mission to help eliminate school lunch debt for our students.
For the past 20 years, the District has offered and served breakfast and lunch at most of our schools at no charge. For the schools that don't qualify, that cost adds up quickly for our families and the District. LRSD's goal is to eliminate the remaining meal debt for the 2024-25 school year, totaling approximately $174,000 for 13 schools.
"That number is not just a statistic. It represents real children in real classrooms who are trying to learn while their families struggle to afford basic needs. No child should have to worry about whether or not they can eat a meal at school, " said Stephanie Walker-Hynes. "As a community, we have the power to lift this burden and ensure that every student is treated with dignity and care."
She implored the community, including businesses, individuals, civic groups, and faith-based organizations across the city, to help pay off the debt.
