February 9, 2024

 Dear LRSD Stakeholders:

The unexpected extended school closures in January and the impending eclipse are causing districts across the state to revisit school calendars to ensure students can meet state requirements. On Thursday, February 8th, the LRSD Board of Education approved the transition from a 178-day traditional calendar to an alternative calendar that is based on a minimum required number of student instructional hours (1068). This change has resulted in the following:

Friday, February 16th, will now be a regular school day; all students should attend school.  Please note that Monday, February 19th, is still a professional development day for teachers, and students will not attend school that day. The Parent-Teacher conferences scheduled for February 16th will be held on Tuesday, February 20th, after school. We understand the importance of these adjustments and the impact they may have on your plans, which is why we are committed to ensuring clear communication about these changes.

Additionally, although school hours for middle and high schools will not change, bell schedules may be adjusted. Parents of secondary students should expect to receive specific information from their child’s school regarding bell schedules. The last day of school for all LRSD students is now May 31, 2024.

Employees will receive specific information from the Human Resources Department regarding employment contract makeup days.  LRSD school-based employees should speak with their supervisors if they have additional questions.

We encourage all parents, students, and staff to review the newly approved calendar and make the necessary arrangements. Please be assured that we will continue to share this information across all communication channels. We ask that schools also actively communicate these updates to parents to ensure everyone is well-informed.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain the integrity of the school calendar while prioritizing the educational needs of our students.
