STUDENT TECHNOLOGY USE & DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP POLICY

Effective Date: July 1, 2026

Section 1. Purpose and Philosophy

The Little Rock School District (LRSD) provides students with access to a wide range of technology resources, including devices, software (which may include access to artificial intelligence (AI) systems), and internet access. Our goal is to empower learning, foster creativity, and develop skills for future success. Access to these resources is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to act as a safe, ethical, and responsible digital citizen.

This policy outlines the acceptable use of all LRSD technology resources by students, defines expectations for behavior, and ensures a secure and compliant digital environment for all. It is built on principles of respect, responsibility, and academic integrity. This document, in conjunction with the LRSD Student Handbook, governs all student use of district technology, whether on or off school property.

Section 2. Scope and Definitions

Technology Resources: Includes, but is not limited to, district-issued devices (laptops, Chromebooks, iPads), the school network (wired and wireless), internet access, cloud-based services (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft 365), district-licensed software, and any AI systems or tools provided or permitted by the district.

Note: "Technology resources" encompasses machines, devices, and transmission facilities used in information processing, including computers, software, and related products; devices used to process information electronically; any component related to information processing and wired/wireless telecommunications; and all electronic mail accounts issued by a public entity.

User: Any student or authorized guest using LRSD Technology Resources.

AI Systems: Refers to generative AI platforms, machine learning models, and other AI-powered tools used to create content, analyze data, or assist in learning.

Section 3. General Use and Digital Citizenship

Students are expected to adhere to the same high standards of conduct online as they are in the classroom. All users of LRSD technology resources must agree to the following:

A. Respect for Self, Others, and Property

Users will not create, transmit, or display content that is obscene, profane, harassing, discriminatory, or defamatory, including AI-assisted content.

Cyberbullying, hate speech, and any form of online harassment are strictly prohibited and will be subject to disciplinary action.

Users will respect the intellectual property of others by properly citing sources and adhering to copyright laws.

Users will not intentionally damage, misuse, or alter any hardware or software belonging to the district.

Students are not permitted to intentionally override or avoid LRSD security and system-integrity procedures.

B. Academic Integrity

Work submitted must be the user's own, unless collaboration is explicitly permitted by the instructor. The use of AI tools must be cited and follow guidelines established in Section 4.

Users will not use technology resources for plagiarism, cheating, or any other form of academic dishonesty.

C. Network Security and Integrity

Users must not share their passwords with anyone other than their parents/guardians.

To enhance security, users will be required to set up and use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on their district accounts where applicable.

Users are prohibited from attempting to bypass district content filters, firewalls, or other security measures.

Users must not download or install unauthorized software, applications, or extensions on district devices.

Any suspected security issue or breach must be reported immediately to a teacher or administrator.

Students shall not engage in illegal activities or activities otherwise prohibited by federal or state law.

Section 4. Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

A. AI as a Learning Tool: Students may use district-approved AI systems to assist with brainstorming, research, and skill development as directed by their classroom teacher. AI should enhance thinking and learning, not replace it.

B. Transparency and Citation: Students must cite the use of any AI system in their work, just as they would cite a book or website. Your teacher will provide specific guidelines on how to cite AI tools for assignments.
AI-generated content must be actively edited and developed by the student. Submitting unedited AI work as one's own without proper citation may be considered plagiarism.

C. Data Privacy and Safety: Students must not enter any personal, private, or confidential information into public or non-approved AI systems. This includes names, addresses, student ID numbers, photos, or any personal information about others, to comply with FERPA and COPPA.

D. Critical Evaluation: Students should understand that AI systems can produce inaccurate, incomplete, or biased information. All AI-generated content must be critically evaluated, fact-checked, and revised for accuracy and appropriateness.

E. Teacher Discretion: Teachers will guide students on the appropriate uses of AI for classroom activities and individual assignments. Students should respect and follow their teachers' instructions concerning AI.

Section 5. District-Issued Devices: Care, Damage, and Insurance

A. Student Responsibility: Students are responsible for the proper care of their assigned device, including chargers and accessories. Devices should be kept in protective cases or classroom carts when not in use.

B. Reporting Damage, Loss, or Theft: All damage, loss, or theft must be reported immediately to school staff or administration. In the case of theft, a police report will be required.

C. Repair and Replacement Costs: The student and their parent/guardian are financially responsible for repair or replacement of a lost, stolen, or damaged device, charger, or case.
Loaner devices may be available while a device is being repaired; availability is not guaranteed, and loaners may not be taken home.

D. Optional Device Coverage Program: LRSD strongly encourages parents to purchase optional device coverage through our third-party partner, School Device Coverage. Coverage must be active before any incident occurs. Parents can purchase coverage directly from the provider's website; schools do not collect money for coverage.

Section 6. Privacy and Monitoring

Privacy Considerations: For safety and security, all use of LRSD-owned technology resources (networks and devices) may be monitored. Users should not expect privacy on these systems.

District's Right to Monitor: LRSD reserves the right to monitor, inspect, access, and review all user activity and files at any time, in accordance with FERPA, COPPA, and applicable Arkansas and federal privacy and cybersecurity laws.

Password Access: Authorized administrators may request passwords or other access information during investigations into potential policy violations or security concerns. Cooperation helps maintain a safe environment.

Section 7. Accessibility for Students with Disabilities

LRSD is committed to ensuring that all technology resources—including websites, software, and digital content—are accessible to individuals with disabilities. Reasonable accommodations will be made to provide equal participation. Students or parents who have difficulty accessing resources should contact their school's 504 Coordinator or building principal.

Section 8. Policy Violations

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including:

Loss of technology privileges

Detention, suspension, or expulsion (per the LRSD Student Handbook)

Financial liability for damages

Referral to law enforcement for illegal activities
