LRSD's Department of Teaching and Learning shared an important update with parents of elementary-aged students regarding the state's new reading requirement. Please note the letter sent to parents below:
We know how important it is for every child to feel confident as a reader- it’s the foundation for all future learning. In keeping with the Arkansas LEARNS Act and the state’s Right to Read vision, this year’s third-grade students must meet a minimum reading standard in order to be promoted to fourth grade.
We want to reassure you that our focus is not only on meeting a requirement, but on providing the encouragement, resources, and support each student needs to thrive. Your child’s success is a shared journey, and we are committed to walking alongside you every step of the way.
One of the best ways families can strengthen reading growth at home is by setting aside just 20 minutes a day to read together. Asking questions about what your child is reading and encouraging them to share their favorite parts helps build both comprehension and confidence. Here is a resource that includes questions you can ask before, during, and after your child reads at home.
Because state assessment data, both K-2 end-of-year test data and K-3 beginning of year screener data, will be released in October, now is a good time to make sure you have access to the Parent Portal. The portal is where you can view your child’s state assessment level, once it is available. To make this process easier, we’ve included an FAQ, linked here, with step-by-step guidance for logging in and getting started. If you still have questions after reviewing the FAQ, please contact your child’s school. We will follow up with additional information that will help you understand state assessment data.
Together, we can help every student grow as a reader and build a strong foundation for lifelong success. Thank you for being a valued member of the LRSD family.
