The Little Rock School District Board of Directors has officially approved April Rike as the next principal of Little Rock Central High School, marking an inspiring new chapter for one of the most historic schools in the nation.
A proud Central High alumna and lifelong advocate for public education, Rike brings more than 20 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and instructional leader. She currently serves as Assistant Principal and School Improvement Specialist at Little Rock Southwest High School, where she has led professional learning communities, coached teachers, and used data-driven strategies to strengthen instruction and improve student outcomes. Nationally Board Certified, Rike is known for her commitment to building strong relationships, fostering high expectations, and creating safe, equitable learning environments where every student can succeed.
Her connection to Central runs deep. Rike attended Central High herself; her children walked the same halls as students, and even her grandfather was once part of the Tiger community, giving her a unique multigenerational bond with the school’s legacy.
For generations, Central High School has stood as a national symbol of resilience, courage, and opportunity. As the District prepares for the retirement of longtime principal Nancy Rousseau, whose more than two decades of leadership have helped guide the school through a period of tremendous growth and achievement, Rike’s appointment represents both continuity and a forward-looking vision.
District leaders say Rike’s experience across elementary, middle, and high school settings, along with her passion for instructional excellence and student success, make her uniquely suited to lead Central into its next era.
Standing on the steps of the iconic school where history continues to unfold, last week's announcement signaled not only a leadership transition but a renewed commitment to the students, staff, and community who carry forward the enduring spirit of Central High.
With deep roots in the Tiger tradition and a clear focus on the future, April Rike now steps into the role ready to help the next generation of Central High students learn, lead, and make history of their own.
