About Us

Dunbar was built in 1929, Dunbar Magnet Middle School (formerly Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and Junior College) was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. With ongoing support from the National Dunbar Alumni Association, the Paul Laurence Dunbar Historic Neighborhood Association, and an instructional emphasis on high achievement, global awareness, and social responsibility, the school continues to prepare world leaders who are able to think globally and lead locally.

Dunbar's Gifted and Talented International Studies programs enhance the standard middle school curriculum. All students participate in the International Studies program by taking at least one of the foreign language interdisciplinary electives each year.

Gifted and Talented students take an accelerated curriculum in math, science, social studies and English.

Dunbar was the first school in Little Rock to receive the National PTA School of Excellence Award.

We consistently place in All Region Choir and our band students do very well at Solo and Ensemble Competitions.
