ViPS Reading Day
A few brave performers ZOOMED their way into LRSD elementary classrooms on November 17th to remind students just how fun it is to discover a new book and share it with others. (Right-to-left) Kathleen Pate performed as Lady Liberty during her reading of My Left Foot. Superintendent Mike Poore shared Have You Filled a Bucket Today? with students on their feet in response. The wacky and fun Amelia Bedelia was introduced by Deborah Baldwin and Jim Metzger. Even Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. shared his thoughts on reading, encouraging students to find something that excites them and read, read, read!
With volunteer readers unable to visit classrooms this year, ViPS focused on building classroom libraries. Well over ONE THOUSAND new books were donated by loyal friends and donors! Many wrote personal notes sharing their love for reading and encouraging students to increase the time they spend reading each day. Leigh Cooper, a 26-year teacher from Jefferson Elementary, expressed her gratitude: "ViPS Reading Day has always been a favorite day at our school. Thank yo for making this year's Reading Day so special during these challenging times." Well said Ms. Cooper!
General Reading Day information:
What is ViPS Reading Day? It is a one-day event hosted by Volunteers in Public Schools with a two-fold objective:
- To encourage READING for all ages.
- To raise awareness of volunteer opportunities within the Little Rock School District.
Is registration required in order to participate? Yes. It is our goal for every elementary classroom to have a visiting reader on Reading Day. All assignments are made from registrations received.
What are readers expected to do? Readers are asked to select a story (15-30 minutes in length) to read to their assigned class. It is important to share your love for reading with your students and encourage positive reading habits during your visit. Many volunteers will incorporate the use of props, visuals, or use funny voices to keep students engaged. We encourage you to have fun and be creative! Need ideas on selecting a book? Click here
How long will it take? Though most volunteers are in the classroom for approximately 30 minutes, allow one hour to include a timely arrival and check-in.
Once I register, when will I receive my assignment? Most assignments are mailed during the last week of October and the first week of November. If you have not received a letter or e-mail from the ViPS office by November 10th, please call 447-4450.
