The word of the month at Pulaski Heights Elementary is "compassion", but students went beyond words by showing compassion through The Giving Tree project. It all started in Mrs. Erwin's counseling classes with lessons on what it is to show compassion and with Shel Silverstein's book, The Giving Tree. Every grade level responded to the lesson by bringing specific food items each day that will be donated to the LR Compassion Center. Their giving resulted in 109 packages of Pasta, 62 pounds of rice,188 cans of fruits and vegetables and 24 pounds of beans that will help feed hungry families this holiday season.
Recently at Williams Magnet Elementary, over 120 students from various elementary and middle schools across Central Arkansas participated in the City-Wide Chess Tournament. This was the first of five tournaments to be held from December through April. The teams representing LRSD include:

Two students were honored by The Make A Wish Foundation for artwork they donated. The students were Jermaine Poe 8th grade and Jennifer Salicido 8th grade. The students were inspired to donate their artwork by their art teacher, Lauren Marlin. Their artwork was so inspiring to Make A Wish, they decided to honor these two students with a great presentation.
Make A Wish honored Cloverdale with a banner that will hang in my classroom to remind students to be philanthropic as well as thankful for their lives that many must fight for. Jennifer and Jermaine were awarded with Make A Wish boxes that contained a thank you plaque as well as hand made cards from the children who have received a Make A Wish gift. The two also were awarded with the knowledge of helping someone else. Congratulations to these students!
The Henderson EAST students collected money for the great cause, Hats Off For Cancer. Henderson students were allowed to pay $1 and wear a hat for the day. The students collected $134.00 to donate to Hats Off For Cancer. This great organization collects and donates hats of all kinds to the courageous children who lose their hair due to cancer treatments. Thanks to Henderson Magnet Middle School students for such a great fundraiser!
