King students stay healthy and safe

Employees

Students at M.L. King Magnet Elementary recently participated in "Wellness Week," a week-long activity centered on health and safety. Students learned about bike safety, developing healthy habits, how to make their homes more fire safe, fitness and nutrition, and even what it's like to be in a hospital!

Kindergarten students in the photo above are dressed in hospital scrubs and have "casts" on their fingers as they go through the "Hospital Ties" module. King school nurse Stevanna Cherepski, a.k.a. Nurse Stevie, and Jennifer Hurst from Arkansas Children's Hospital (sitting on floor) lead the "lesson."

The staff at King believes that fun activities will help reinforce the message of staying safe and healthy at home and while away.

Central places 16th in national math contest

Students

Little Rock Central High School has some of the best high-school mathematicians in the country, as demonstrated by its 16th-place finish in the 2009 Fall Startup Event, a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing (http://www.natassessment.com). Coach Summer McFarland prepared the students for their first major competition of the academic year in which they worked furiously for 30 minutes, racing to answer 100 problems in a variety of mathematical topics. With so many questions and so little time, competitors must not only have strong mathematical skills but also must be able to quickly decide which problems to solve and which to skip.

After the results from students across the nation were processed, several Central students received individual awards, helping their team to its 16th-place finish. In the 10th-grade division, Joseph Berleant placed 18th, and Aaron Yin and Whitney Gao tied for 24th place.

National Assessment & Testing administers high-quality mathematics competitions that high schools can participate in through the mail. Its contests cover a variety of formats, including individual and team tests in a variety of difficulties, from 100 easy problems in 30 minutes to 15 complex problems in one week.

First in Math Update

Students

Since the beginning of this school year, our students have solved an estimated 9.5 million math problems on First in Math. Our District sticker total is 3,164,485!!!  That is an average of 3,417 stickers per team.

Otter Creek Elementary School continues to lead the stickers per team category with an average of 10,712 stickers per team (15 teams)!!!  Mann Magnet Middle School continues to lead the total number of stickers category with a total of 266,995 stickers! Look out Otter Creek and Mann because others are closing in!

Keep in mind that our students have a long weekend coming up…Please encourage them to practice their First in Math over the weekend so they can continue to earn stickers. Remind them that they can access FIM by using computers at the public libraries, churches, community centers, etc.

Don’t forget to check the national rankings (sort by grades).  Also, the Family Link is available for parents/family members to play along with their students. We have family members ranked in the top 100 Family Members in the Nation! Congratulations!!!
