The 4th grade gifted and talented students at Martin Luther King Magnet Elementary took the Grand Prize trophy at WorldFest for their Egyptian exhibit and the continent of Africa. After learning all about the research process and making a specific artifact relating to ancient Egypt, the students dressed as Egyptians and shared their knowledge of the country with WorldFest attendees.
The information that the students learned about mummification inspired them to make their own “mummy.” Each worked with a raw chicken for several weeks, drying it out with salt and using cinnamon to mask the smell. After the chickens were completely dry, the students wrapped their mummies in gauze and decorated them with jewels, just like the ancient Egyptians did with theirs.
The students learned a great deal of information from this project, just in time to visit the "World of the Pharaohs" exhibit at the Arkansas Arts Center!
