International Studies!


Bringing the WORLD to Dunbar!!


We are sooo excited!!!


During the month of February, Dunbar Middle School will have a very special guest. Dr. Herbert Woodward Martin will grace our school with his presence. Dr. Martin is a renowned poet and award-winning author.  He is well known for his reading performances of Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Dr. Martin will visit Dunbar the first week in February. He will present Paul Laurence Dunbar's poetry in character for the school and community.  He will visit classrooms to speak with students about poetry, creative writing, and African American literature. He will also give a professional development workshop on creative writing and African American literature.  

Year-Long Electives

  • Exploratory Languages & Cultures
         6th grade students will have the opportunity to take
         an exploratory course each 9 weeks to learn more
         about Spanish, Latin, German, and French language and
         culture. This will assist students in selecting a
         foreign language to pursue for further study.

  • Planet Earth
         Students may take a year-long elective in which they
         examine the environment and global issues in other
         countries through engaging activities that include a
         recycling program, work in the Dunbar garden, and
         many hands-on programs.

  • Crafts of the World
         Students study the crats and art of different
         countries in Africa, Latin America, Europe,
         and Asia. Students will produce unique crafts
         from each unit of study.

  • Global Studies
         Students will have the opportunity to
         undertake an in-depth study of Indonesian
         history and culture, to study an economic unit
         on the Tea Trade 7 Opium Wars, to complete an
         issues through use of primary source  
         documents.

  • Advanced Language Studies
         Advanced language study allows students to
         build a strong foundation for study of foreign
         languages in ways that engage and challange
         them.
         Language Choices:Spanish, Latin, German, French

    Curriculum Connections

  • Novels
         Through the use of novels set in other  
         countries, students examine other cultures
         through literature connections.

  • Biographies
         The life stories of international scientist,
         artist, mathematicians, writers, and may  
         other notable figures are interwoven in
         content areas through the reading of  
         biographies.

  • Global Village Learning Zone
         The 21st Century rank for Dunbar's after
         school program allows students to learn
         yoga, international cooking, world crafts, and
         ballroom dancing as well as to receive
         small group tutoring in math.
