The Felder Alternative Learning Academy is a militarily structured program for 6th-12th grade students designed to modify a student's behavior and to provide opportunities for academic success. Felder is a tri-district conversion charter school and accepts students from the Little Rock School District, North Little Rock School District and the Pulaski County Special School District. Students are assigned to Felder by the Student Hearing Office or by the Board of Directors from their districts. Assignments to Felder are also made through the Juvenile Justice Courts. Official notice of this assignment will be given to both the home school and Felder.
Upon assignment to Felder, students and parents must participate in an intake meeting where the procedures and guidelines of the Felder Alternative Learning Academy are explained and the expectations of the students are clearly defined. Felder uses a framework and methodology which parallels the military. It provides constructive, disciplined standards that lead to effective self-discipline, respect for authority and good citizenship. A uniformed dress code is required. Failure of the students or parents to accept these guidelines can result in the student being refused admittance into Felder.
The academic program for Felder focuses on the core curriculum. Courses of study will enable the student to perform at grade level and will include English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and other electives linked to career focus areas. Classes are limited in size and are designed to meet the student's individual needs. Placement at Felder will be for a minimum of a semester and up to a year depending on the category of the violation. The student must comply with the terms of placement and meet individual behavior management and academic expectations prior to returning to the home campus or graduating.
Felder students must adhere to the mandatory state attendance laws. Failure to attend will result in the Felder staff making the appropriate referrals to the Student Hearing Offices within their respective districts and to the courts.
