Mabelvale Magnet Middle School is scheduled on an A-B block system. Each student takes four ninety-minute classes on alternate days. Most students like the block; they have time to understand assignments before taking them home, time to review before tests, and more time for homework and projects. Mabelvale is one of four middle schools in Arkansas chosen to pilot "Great Expectations of Arkansas," a character-education based program for youth. Students participate in this highly-respected program that models respect, responsibility, honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, caring, character and citizenship. Each year, Mabelvale students participate with "Provider Pals," an organization based in Libby, Montana, that partners with five schools in the United States to share information about environmental culture. Farmers, loggers, miners, and other workers whose jobs involve the environment and natural resources come to our school to demonstrate parts of their jobs. Mabelvale Magnet Middle School sends students to Libby each summer to experience life on a ranch, a farm, around a mill, and a mine while sharing Arkansas' culture with other teenagers. Our teachers embrace the concept that children are more involved in learning when there is active participation. Mabelvale Magnet has initiated the use of "student-led" conferences, in which the student explains his/her work, projects, and grades to his/her parents at Parent Conferences. The teacher’s role shifts from source of information to facilitator. These conferences have been greeted with great enthusiasm and student pride. Mabelvale Magnet Middle School was one of eight schools in the United States chosen to pilot a program through the Southern Regional Education Board called "Making Middle Grades Work." One of the major goals of the program is to strengthen teaching strategies through staff development. Mabelvale Magnet Middle School received an Advanced Placement Incentive Grant to provide a range of support services for students in Pre-AP courses. The funding provides instructional design support for higher quality, more rigorous classes; professional development to further develop the delivery skills and content knowledge of the teachers and heighten their expectations; develop and implement the curricula in preparation for its successive courses; increase student enrollment and provide support; and keep parents and guardians informed about the Pre-AP program/course offerings, the importance of their commitment and the long-term effect. Mabelvale teachers work independently to increase their knowledge and learn new strategies for teaching. Over 40% of our teachers have advanced degrees and many others are seeking advanced degrees at various universities across the state. One of our teachers has earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and five others are seeking that recognition. Several of our teachers and administrators are our have been acknowledged regionally and nationally for their work as educators, researchers, and presenters. Mabelvale Magnet Middle School is also the proud home of 2001 Milken Educator Award winner Assistant Principal Connie Green. Mabelvale opened in 1952, and became part of the Little Rock School District in 1987. Mabelvale has a closed campus which includes 42 classrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium, and football/soccer field. The school has a well-maintained campus with six new classrooms, newly remodeled facilities and entrances. Over 50 faculty members are available to provide high quality educational programs that enable each student to achieve his or her highest potential.
