Little Rock School District declared unitary |
|
|
|
On Friday, February 23, 2007, nine years after entering into the Revised Desegration Plan, LRSD was granted unitary status by U.S. District Judge William Wilson.
In his decision, Judge Wilson finds that the school district has complied with all of the obligations of the 1998 plan. “This means that LRSD is no longer under any supervision and monitoring obligations from me, ODM, or Joshua,” states Judge Wilson. “LRSD’s Board can now operate the district as it sees fit; answerable to no one except LRSD’s students and patrons and the voters who elected them to office.”
A brief timeline is provided below outlining the more than 20 year process of compliance by the Little Rock School District.
1982 LRSD seeks to consolidate with North Little Rock and Pulaski County Special school districts.
1984 Consolidation approved by the court
1985 Consolidation decision overturned on appeal
1998 LRSD and the Joshua Intervenors voluntarily agree to entering into the Revised Desegregation and Education Plan
2001 LRSD applies for unitary status with the court
2004 Court of Appeals affirms need to program evaluations
2006 LRSD reapplies for unitary status
2007 LRSD is granted unitary status
