LRSD’s EXCEL Medical Students Benefit from Blue & You Grant


EXCEL Logo(December 6, 2017) - The Little Rock School District is among only 40 recipients out of more than 200 applicants to be awarded a grant from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas.  LRSD’s EXCEL Advanced Medical Sciences Program will receive the $117,460 requested grant to support concurrent credit opportunities for students who are studying careers related to medicine. 

“We are appreciative to the Blue & You Foundation for its generosity and support of initiatives that directly impact our students and community,” said Shameka Montgomery, director of LRSD’s Career/Technical Education Program. “Securing a grant of this magnitude was no easy feat, especially considering the number of deserving applicants., and we are committed to ensuring that it will be used to advance student success.”

 “This Blue &You Foundation grant is a perfect match for EXCEL The innovative health program provides students the opportunity to earn high school and a college credit at Pulaski Tech while completing health projects that allow in-depth exploration and study of topics in the health sciences,” added Linda Young, director of LRSD’s Grants/Program Development Department.

As a result of receiving the grant, 80 students from the District’s five high schools will be able to not only gain college credit, they will gain valuable employment skills and professional certifications by participating in a medical studies course.

Last week, participating students demonstrated the training they are acquiring though the District’s partnership with Baptist Health, by going through four training stations:

Station 1:  Trace the flow of the Heart

Station 2:  Perform Radial and Carotid Pulse

Station 3:  Manual and Electronic Blood Pressure

Station 4:  CPR

About EXCEL: -  EXCEL Careers for Advanced Professional Studies is a high school program that operates multiple career strands for 11-12th grades students, providing real and relevant learning experiences.  Each career strand offers internships, industry certifications and college credit.   LRSD students were introduced to new, exciting opportunities to explore careers this year through EXCEL. Students currently enrolled in the EXCEL program are gaining knowledge and experience through the following strands and work sites:

Baptist Health Education Center – Medical & Health Sciences
UA Little Rock School Education -Teacher Cade/Orientation
Aristotle – Technology Solutions
Metro Campus (open to all students in Pulaski County) – Construction

Additionally, a partnership with the Rock Region Metro bus system helps eliminate transportation barriers during the school day, providing a ride to and from work sites.
