Meetings Begin with LRSD Stakeholders to Discuss Facilities Utilization

Little Rock School District Superintendent Mike Poore has initiated a series of meetings to share the District’s plans for determining the best use of LRSD school facilities for the 2017-18 school year and beyond. The meetings began with a presentation Thursday, October 13, 2016, to the LRSD Community Advisory Board and the Arkansas Department of Education Board of Directors regarding proposed budget reductions for 2017-18, followed by an introduction to LRSD principals.  Included in the proposal was the potential closure of up to four elementary schools.

A Facilities Utilization Committee, serving in an advisory capacity, and comprised of LRSD administrators, community members, and parents, began meeting October 19. The committee is reviewing a Facilities Planning Document, prepared by the district, which includes information about school enrollment and city census trends, per-pupil costs, and age and condition of facilities. The document leaves room to add information from stakeholders, options to consider, and whether or not the school is being considered for closure.

A capacity study is currently taking place to determine each school's functional capacity. The information obtained will be used in the facilities planning.

In addition to three meetings of the Facilities Utilization Committee, community meetings will be held in each of the seven Board Election Zones to gather input from the community. When the committee determines which schools will be recommended for closure, the recommendations will be presented to the LRSD Community Advisory Board, and meetings will be held within the impacted school communities. The final recommendations will be presented to Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner Johnny Key, who serves as the LRSD Board of Directors.
