7 LRSD Schools Earn Achieving Status, Wilson Named Exemplary

LRSD tops the list for most schools with the “achieving” designation in a three-way tie with Fort Smith and Springdale School Districts.  One of the district’s seven achieving schools, Wilson Elementary, had the added distinction of being one of only nine schools in Arkansas to earn the coveted “exemplary” status.


LRCH Senior Has His Eye on the Prize During National Siemens Competition

Ayush Saraswat, a senior from Little Rock Central High School has been named a Semifinalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition for Math, Science & Technology, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students. Saraswat’s submission was his science fair project titled “MEye”, which allows people with disabilities to use a computer with their eyes.  Saraswat is among 331 incredible students recognized as a Siemens semifinalist and the only student from Arkansas.

The 2013 Siemens Competition generated unprecedented participation, showcasing students’ growing interest in science, math and technology subjects. A record 2,440 students registered for this year’s competition with a total of 1,599 projects submitted for consideration.

LRCH Senior Tyler Mann Recognized by the 2013 WENDY’S® HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN® Program

Little Rock Central and the Little Rock School District are proud to celebrate Tyler Mann who was recently named School Winner and State Finalist for the prestigious Wendy’s® High School Heisman® Award. Mann was chosen for his excellence in academics, athletics, and community leadership, and will move on to the next round of judging to compete for the coveted National award.

“On behalf of Little Rock Central and the Little Rock School District, we are excited to celebrate and honor the outstanding athletic and scholastic achievements of Tyler Mann with this prestigious award,” said Nancy Rousseau, Principal

The Wendy’s High School Heisman Award celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school seniors both in and out of the classroom. Just as the collegiate Heisman is known for being the highest award in college football, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award is recognized as the most esteemed award at the high school level, as it encourages future leadership by acknowledging well-rounded students.

Mann was selected as a School Winner and State Finalist based on the following accomplishments:

2x USA National Wrestling All-American, 3x Arkansas Wrestling State Champion, 3x Arkansas All-State Wrestler, 2x Most Outstanding Wrestler Award, 2x Win magazine Wrestler of the year, 2x National Champion, 3 year Varsity Cross Country, 2 years Football, 3 years Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 3 years Young Life city program,  1 year Beta Club, 1 year EAST Lab Program,  Drama Club – Troubadours, Member of Immanuel Baptist youth group, member of USA youth sports wrestling association and volunteer youth Coach

LRSD Complying with New State Law Banning E-cigarettes

The Little Rock School District has begun placing informational stickers at the entrances of all public school campuses and buildings to indicate the ban on electronic or e-cigarettes. This was done in compliance with Act 1099, passed during 2013’s regular legislative session, prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes on all public school properties. In the act, e-cigarettes are defined as “electronic oral devices” which provide a vapor of nicotine or another substance used to simulate smoking. This restriction applies to all adults and all students. 

 Act 1451, also passed during the 2013 legislative session, prohibits minors from purchasing and possessing e-cigarettes. A detailed description of the acts is available on the Arkansas Legislature’s website at


LRSD Continues to Make Measurable Progress Closing the Achievement Gap

The District is proud to announce the achievement gap between African-American students and their white, non-Hispanic peers has narrowed in 13 out of the 15 areas tested with Benchmark and End-of-Course Exams during the period from 2009 through 2013. The tested areas were literacy and math in grades 3-8 and Algebra, Geometry and 11th grade literacy at the high school level.  The District narrowed the gap by double-digits in literacy at grades 4, 5, and 6.  The largest reduction in the gap was 17 percentage points in grade 4 literacy. The reduction in the District’s achievement gap paralleled that of the state as a whole. The only tested areas where the gap widened were in grades 5 and 6 math, which occurred at both the district and state levels.

About the Achievement Gap
The achievement gap in education refers to the disparity in academic performance between groups of students, according to Education Week. It is most often used to describe the troubling performance gaps between African-American and their non-Hispanic white peers. After the passage of No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, closing the achievement gap became a focus of education accountability.
