The Parent Academy -“It’s a New Season” is a Win-Win

The Little Rock School District’s Parent Involvement Department recently kicked off the 2012-2013 school year with a new vision for parents. The initiative - “It’s a New Season” - is a part of the shared vision to increase student achievement by promoting parental involvement.  Studies show that students whose parents are active and engaged in their education have better outcomes.  When schools and families work together to support learning, everyone benefits.

During the academy, about 200 parents and students attended various workshops which provided information and tools to help ensure a successful school year. The workshops included presentations from various programs and departments within the district including Special Programs, the Math Department, the Communications Department, Dropout Prevention & Safe Schools, the Accelerated Learning Center, and Metropolitan Career & Technical Center.

Extra motivation came from the guest speaker, Mrs. Annette “Momma Fish” Fisher, mother of noted NBA player and former Parkview alum Derek Fisher.  Momma Fish spoke to parents about being role models for their children, talking to their children about school, and knowing who their friends are.

Parent Involvement Coordinator Kaye Rainey was pleased with the turnout and hopes parents left with valuable information to help encourage strong partnerships between them and their child’s teachers.
