Jane Mendel Reading Day— an LRSD tradition for 16 years and counting!

Volunteers shared their love of reading with over 650 elementary classes on Tuesday, November 13th in honor of the 16th annual ViPS Jane Mendel Reading Day.

“This is our district’s most popular volunteer activity, said Rita F. Qualls, president of Volunteers in Public Schools (ViPS).  Volunteers begin signing up to read in September. All of our classes were full by the first of November this year.  Many of these volunteers eagerly look forward to this special day and have been reading to our students every year since the project’s inception. We greatly value their sharing of time, energy and enthusiasm with our students.

“ViPS is committed to emphasizing the life-long importance of reading to these young people.  We are grateful that our community shares our commitment.  And of course, the volunteers wind up enjoying this as much as the students do!  We’re hopeful that some readers will continue their service by becoming reading tutors.  Call us at 447-ViPS for more information.”

ViPS is celebrating 40 years of volunteer service to the Little Rock School District this school year.  We salute everyone who has been a part of that service. Thank you for making a difference every day in our schools.
